Supported by full-time personnel, the Port Washington Fire Department relies on dedicated part-time EMS members who selflessly serve the community when the pager goes off. Under the leadership of both full- and part-time officers, part-time EMTs and paramedics are tasked with responding to medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, and maintaining EMS equipment and apparatus.  Part-time EMS personnel also support public education and participate in community outreach events/standbys.

Part-time EMS providers work 6-, 12-, or 24-hour shifts, responding from the station when a service call comes in. During the day, they participate in training and station duties. With flexible scheduling, this position is ideal for college students pursuing careers in fire service or healthcare. Part-time personnel who have obtained or are pursuing fire certification may also respond to fire-related emergency calls. While the department does not cover the cost of EMT or paramedic education, it does provide opportunities for current students to complete their clinical hours.  New part-time EMS personnel will complete a department orientation covering both department operating and clinical care guidelines.

Part-time EMTs and paramedics are expected to submit at least 24 hours of work availability per month.  In addition to emergency responses, EMS members are required to complete at least 40 hours of continuing education/training per year.  This may include a combination of in-house and online education.  There are also additional opportunities to participate in Rescue Task Force, Technical/Low Angle Rescue, Drone, Surface Water Rescue, and Dive teams.  Current ambulances are equipped with top-of-the-line equipment, including Stryker Power-LOAD stretchers, LIFEPAK 35 cardiac monitors, Butterfly ultrasound, Sapphire infusion pumps, and McGrath video laryngoscopes.

Part-time EMTs and paramedics receive a competitive hourly salary based on their level of licensure.  Additionally, department members have the opportunity to join the Port Washington Fire/EMS Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the fire department, enhancing public safety, accident prevention, education, and supporting community projects for those in need.
