COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION
The Port Washington Fire Department is dedicated to keeping our community safe not only by responding to emergencies, but also by reducing risks before they occur. This approach, known in the fire service as Community Risk Reduction (CRR), brings together education, outreach, inspections, and plan reviews to proactively address hazards and promote safer practices. Through these initiatives, our full-time personnel work hand-in-hand with residents, businesses, and community organizations to ensure buildings are designed and maintained with life safety in mind. By focusing on prevention as well as response, we help ensure that Port Washington remains a safe place to live, work, and visit.
Fire prevention is at the heart of community safety, with education playing a key role in reducing risks before they become emergencies. From classroom visits that teach children essential fire safety skills to our annual Open House during Fire Prevention Week, these programs build awareness and strengthen preparedness for all ages.
In partnership with the Fire/EMS Association, proactive programs promote fire and life safety, education, and community support. From charitable campaigns and scholarships to funding life-saving equipment, these efforts strengthen community connections while honoring the mission of service.
A comprehensive fire inspection helps protect lives and property by ensuring compliance with state and local codes while identifying hazards before they put people at risk. Through annual inspections, code-based plan reviews, and collaborative guidance for property owners, these efforts strengthen fire safety across the community.
