Supported by full-time personnel, the Port Washington Fire Department relies on the prompt and dedicated response of paid-on-call members who selflessly serve the community when the pager goes off. Under the leadership of both full- and part-time fire officers, paid-on-call firefighters are tasked with responding to emergencies, extinguishing fires, safeguarding lives and property, and maintaining fire equipment and apparatus. The role requires extensive training in the use of firefighting apparatus and equipment, as well as the ability to perform hazardous tasks in emergency situations, often demanding strenuous effort in smoky and confined environments.  Paid-on-call personnel also support public education and participate in fire prevention outreach events.

Community members without prior firefighting experience will be provided with the equipment and support needed to complete the State of Wisconsin Firefighter I training program (96 hours).  Hosted at a local technical college, the course introduces the essential skills needed to perform basic firefighting and hazardous materials response functions.  This program combines both classroom and practical instruction, followed by a state certification examination.  Following the completion of the certification process, a new paid-on-call firefighter will complete a department orientation that covers, department operating guidelines, engine company operations, ladder company operations, vehicle extrication, and communications.

Paid-on-call firefighters are expected (when available) to respond to the fire station when paged for significant emergency incidents. The department relies on the response of firefighters to ensure adequate apparatus and personnel are sent to scenes for crews to work safely and effectively to save lives and property.  In addition to emergency responses, department members are required to complete at least 60 hours of continuing education/training per year.  This may include a combination of in-house/department training and additional state certification programs.  Trainings are scheduled at least twice per month.  There are also additional opportunities to participate in Rescue Task Force, Technical/Low Angle Rescue, Drone, Surface Water Rescue, and Dive teams.  Current fire apparatus are equipped with top-of-the-line equipment, including MSA G1 SCBA and TNT Rescue Tools.

Paid-on-call firefighters receive compensation for their time spent responding to calls, attending training, and participating in special events as determined by the Fire Chief. Additionally, department members have the opportunity to join the Port Washington Fire/EMS Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the fire department, enhancing public safety, accident prevention, education, and supporting community projects for those in need.
